The Myth of Overnight Success with Alice Benham

Welcome to our new blog series, "The Myth of Overnight Success". We will be interviewing small & large business owners, mothers, full-time workers, butchers, bakers, candlestick makers... (well maybe not the last three!) and hearing their thoughts on the topic of overnight success!

Starting with the wonderful Alice Benham, (or people tend to call her AB). AB is 22 and lives in Winchester. I first found her on Instagram and binge listened to her podcast, Starting the Conversation .... it was business gal crush at first listen!

We asked Alice some questions about the myth of overnight success then we have created a journal tool for you in response to her answers. Because it wouldn't be MOJO without a journal tool now would it?!

1. What is your dream/goal/business?

For me it’s all about helping people to pursue their own version of success, on their terms. Right now I do that through business & marketing coaching and I hope over time that impact continues to evolve and deepen. I count is as *such* a privilege to call this work!

2. When did you set out on your journey towards your dream/goal/business and why?

It definitely wasn’t intentional at the start! I stumbled into business at age 17 and after a whole lot of saying yes, googling unknown terms and over-working I found myself burnt out after 9 months. After recovering from that I realised I had a passion for business and the power of showing up online, so I began marketing coaching in 2017 and the current business has been evolving ever since. I’ve always been one to push the boundaries of what’s possible so for me that’s what it’s about - waking up each day ready to level up myself and, if they want it, the people around me too.

3. What have been your biggest challenges and how do you overcome them?

In the early years it was definitely hard to trust that things were going to work - it took me almost a year to get my first paying client so being consistent with action wasn’t always easy. Reminding myself why I’m so passionate about this business and looking at others' success as evidence that it’s possible definitely helped me keep going! And in recent years it’s been the challenges that come with scaling a business - knowing which step is the right to take, dealing with criticism and feeling the pressure of sustaining ‘success’ once you’ve got it. I see these as growing pains and whilst they don’t go away (if anything they increase with success - windier at the top and all that!)

"I find investing in my own coaching and wellbeing massively supports me in handling them." - AB

4. How do you invest in self care?

In the last year self care has become a staple in my life. On a daily basis I go for as many walks as I can, cold shower (not for everyone I know!), eat foods that make me feel good and end my working day with breathing exercises / stretches. I don’t journal every day but when things are particularly full on, like launch periods, I find real comfort in working through my thoughts each morning. I used to see self care as nice added extras, now I realise they’re the habits which keep me feeling and working at my best.

5. What are your thoughts on overnight success?

It isn’t a thing, at least not in my experience! Sustainable growth breeds sustainable results and I truly believe impactful and value-driven businesses take time to build. So much of the ‘success’ you see online is down to years of action, failure and consistency but, in a world that celebrates the shiny, that isn’t always shown. I remember in the early days wondering why everyone else's businesses were going so well when mine wasn’t… now I realise they were either 5 years ahead or not quite telling the full story about what was going on BTS.

6. What did you believe when you started out vs what you have learned along the way?

When I first stepped into business I thought the more I replicated the approaches of others (their tone of voice, message, business structure etc) the more I would find success. Now I realise it’s the total opposite - the more true my business is to me and the way I want to do things, the more successful it is. It took a lot of replicating and failing to learn that lesson but it’s one that makes my current business such a joy to run.

7. Do you have any advice you would like to give someone working towards a dream or goal?

Take uncomfortable action! It’s not an Instagram worthy quote but it’s the only ‘secret’ to success I know. Taking small, consistent action and pushing yourself out of your comfort zone in the process is what’s going to create change. Don’t wait until you feel ‘ready’ or until the fear is gone, take action now and your future self will thank you for it!

8. Who is your favourite and most inspiring account to follow and why?

Ooh big Q! I love the content Steven Bartlett shares - he has a real gift at giving advice around mindset and success which cut through the noise and make total sense. I always leave his content feeling inspired and ready to take action!

THE JOURNAL PROMPT

- ALICE BENHAM (AB)

We LOVE this quote! So much in fact that it has inspired a journal tool (obviously!)

🖋 - Write down a big fat goal at the top of your page. This could be about anything you like... health, finances, relationships, business...

🖋 - Next, brainstorm everything you are already doing towards achieving this goal (in all likelihood, these things are in your comfort zone!)

🖋- Next write "Stretch Zone" at the top of a new page, and brainstorm all th things you would do towards that goal if you had more money/courage/bravery/time.... AKA if you stopped having excuses!

🖋- Look over the "Stretch Zone" brainstorm and pick three things to ACTUALLY do. Schedule them in your diary!

Let's take AB's advice and 'Take action now, your future self with thank you for it.'
